ISHTA bindu

Welcome to ISHTA.

ISHTA Yoga is a modern synthesis of ancient practices and contemporary sensibility, fusing the pillars of yoga with our current understanding of anatomy, the mind and the spirit to create an infinitely customizable practice that celebrates and serves every yogi’s unique soul. It is an integration of the tools of Hatha, Tantra and Ayurveda into a seamless system that honors each individual body and spirit on its path back to union with intelligence, respect and love.

The name ‘ISHTA’ is both the Sanskrit word for ‘personalized’ or individualized, and an acronym for the pillars of our style of yoga in practice: The Integrated Science of Hatha, Tantra and Ayurveda. Tantric or non-dualistic philosophy supports our connection with the inspiration in the world around us, seeing each individual as a manifestation of that inspiration via the subtle body and five elements; Ayurveda helps us to understand how these elements make each of us unique, as well as giving each pose or practice its own qualities and effects; and Hatha guides us to use the tools of our practice (asana, pranayama, meditation and philosophy) to return back to that unique spirit and share it with the world around us. ISHTA Yoga in Berlin is a community of practitioners and teachers founded in 2007 by Yogiraj Julie Blumenthal, who was initiated as a master teacher of the lineage by its co-founder and her primary teacher, Alan Finger. (You can read more about Julie on our teachers’ page, or visit her homepage here.)  Julie leads weekly classes and workshops as well as being the primary trainer of the Berlin ISHTA Yoga Teacher Trainings, offering both Level 1 (200-hour) and Level 2 (500-hour) study accredited by Yoga Alliance. The Berlin community has its home at Bija Yoga Berlin, where Julie and several of the teachers trained by her teach.
